Donna Payne accepts the award on behalf of her son, Christopher Howard, from Melanie Hunt, chief executive and principal of Sussex Downs College.   Overall Achiever, 2011, Christopher Howard, formerly of 2nd Battalion the Rifles.

Honouring those individuals, groups and teams who have distinguished themselves during the past 12 months, the Awards focused on the human stories of bravery, kindness and selflessness behind the celebrations – turning the spotlight on everyone from good neighbours and outstanding sports teams to the ultimate award, the Award for Overall Achiever of the Year which was won by Christopher Howard, a Sniper with 2nd Battalion the Rifles, who also won the Mayor's Award for Bravery.

Christopher's mother, Donna Payne asked for a one minute silence in honour of those of Christopher's fellow soldiers who didn't make it back from Afghanistan . It was an emotion-charged pause in an evening of delight and excitement and gave everyone time to reflect on the sacrifice and dedication of our troops, and the great debt we owe to them all.

In total, there were 19 categories of award and the sponsors of each category were invited to the stage to present the worthy winners with their well-deserved certificates and trophies.

The Master of Ceremonies for the evening was actor Jonathan Linsley, who has appeared in Pirates of the Caribbean , Phantom of the Opera and most recently, Marshlands on TV. The sponsors for each category were invited up onto the stage to present the deserving winners with their awards.

The Herald's Editor-in-Chief Keith Ridley and Rotarian Melanie Adams hosted the evening, which was also attended by the Mayor of Eastbourne , Cllr Carolyn Heaps and Eastbourne MP Stephen Lloyd.

A delicious three course dinner, dancing, music – and stories to inspire. It was a great evening and one that will be long-remembered by all who were there.
